Employee care and human rights

Recognizing human resources as its main driving force, Thaioil has developed and adopted the Human Resource Management and Development (HRMD) Model. This model focuses on developing employees' potential and competency to suit our business needs, as well as creating a supportive work environment that promotes employees' engagement and motivates them for excellence in responding to stakeholders' needs.

Performance Management System

In conducting performance assessment under the HRMD Model, Thaioil applies the Performance Management System (PMS), which measures performance against targets, as well as evaluating employees' competencies and potential. The measured results find their application in compensation adjustment, job rotation or promotion and individual development planning (IDP) for employees' continual development.

Career development and individual development plans

Thaioil applies an employee learning and development system to improve performance and set up individual career plans and IDPs. Each employee participates in setting up his or her own development plan, which includes the assignment of additional duties and job rotation after receiving on-the-job training, coaching and knowledge-sharing.

In addition, each employee's career growth is managed through his or her performance assessment outcome, that is, the technical career path focusing on growth through vocational skill blocks, measured in competency growth and performance and the management career path focusing on growth under the G-Scheme.

Top management succession plans are devised by setting selection criteria that correspond with the candidates' models and career planning, competencies, potential and performance. Then the selected candidates go through the steps of leadership competency development. Employee relations

In addition to fair management of compensation, career development and individual competency development, Thaioil promotes employees' harmony, unity, and contentment of the workplace as their second home. We also maintain good relations with retired employees. Below are examples of our employee relations projects and activities.

Top management meet employees

  • Organized twice annually, the project provides senior management with opportunities to clarify policies and share operating directions, news and information with employees, while employees can pose questions and make recommendations for business and corporate improvement.

Physical and social health promotional activities

  • Founding of Thaioil Club for meetings, sports and recreational activities.
  • Annual sports events to enhance healthy wellbeing and relations among refineries.
  • Thaioil Summer Camp and TOP Day Camp, organized twice annually in April and October for employees' children
  • Thaioil Group Family Rally, organized annually to enhance relations between employees and their families

Promotion of mental and intellectual wellbeing

  • Organized twice annually, the Beautiful Life Project invites widely regarded persons within and outside the Group to share knowledge and experience concerning their insights on leading life and financial aspects.
  • Offering of food alms to monks to mark New Year's Day.

Human rights

Respect for human rights and the value of human beings underlie human resource development, which is the key to sustainable development of business values and new products. Therefore, Thaioil has always conducted its business with recognition of fundamental human rights through fair treatment of all employees and stakeholders, regardless of skin color, race, gender, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, poverty, disability or illness, as well as respecting differences in views, society, environment, laws and cultures, and so on.

Quality, health, safety and environmental management

Quality, health, safety and environmental management

Throughout our business operation, we have focused on the management of quality, occupational health, safety and the environment for sustainable harmonious co-existence. Our quality, health, safety and environmental management system comprises six operating procedures.

Quality management

We focus on producing quality products by ensuring that the management, operation and continual development of our business meet international standards. We also pay close attention to occupational health, safety, environmental and social responsibility by implementing the Integrated Management System (IMS) in all refinery units. We were the first to win the IMS certification.

IMS covers the following standards:

• ISO 9001 quality management standard (MS)

• ISO 14001 environmental MS

• TIS 18001 BS OHSAS 18001: 2007 occupational health and safety MS

• Laboratory capability MS (ISO/IEC 17025).

Our target is to refine crude oil into products that meet customers' requirements and quality standards set forth by the Department of Energy Business, Ministry of Energy, by applying advanced, highly efficient technology, with strict quality control carried out by our laboratory of the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. Out laboratory has won the ISO/ IEC 17025 certification No. 0004 from the Thai Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (TLAS) under the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI). TLAS has also signed laboratory accreditation cooperation agreements with these institutions: - The Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC) in Beijing, the People's Republic of China - The International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) in Tokyo, Japan.

The agreements benefit Thaioil by putting TISI's accreditation of our laboratory on a par with international accreditation standards.

We also value continual development of our management capability by applying the Total Quality Management concept and the system and criteria of the Thailand Quality Award (TQA) as supporting tools for our corporate management, assessment and development. Our goal is to become a corporation of excellence and Asia-Pacific's leader of integrated oil refinery and petrochemical businesses, capable of responding to the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.

As a result of our commitment to quality development, we won the Thailand Quality Class 2009 award, presented by the Thailand Quality Award Office, Thailand Productivity Institute.

Occupational health and safety management

Thaioil is committed to providing occupational health care, a good work environment and work safety so as to ensure a better quality of life for employees and all related parties. Below are the main aspects of our occupation health and safety management system.

Environmental management

We optimize our systematic and comprehensive management of natural resource usage, conformance to rules, regulations, environmental quality standards and the cultivation of environmental awareness among employees, as well as related agencies and parties. To prevent and mitigate impacts, we take measures to ensure that every process and every product are environmentally friendly. Below are our environmental quality promotion measures.

  • Water resources and water quality
    • Our seawater distillation unit eases water shortages so that local public water works are not burdened by our water demand.
    • Our installed sour-water stripper unit relieves the load of our water treatment system so that treated water can be reused.
    • Thanks to physical, chemical and biological treatment, our efficient wastewater treatment discharges nothing beyond limits.
  • Air Quality
    • Our low-NOx burner in production units lowers nitrogen oxide levels in the area.
    • Our ADIP treater eliminates hydrogen sulfide gas in the fuel gas obtained from production units
    • Our sulfur recovery unit (SRU) reduces emitted hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.
    • Our 140-meter-tall stack disperses and dilutes air pollution.
  • Waste management
    • Our decanter, a sludge treatment unit, separates sludge into water, oil and dewatered sludge, thus reducing the mass of sludge requiring elimination down to one-fifth of the original mass.
    • We systematically store and monitor process waste before sending it in batches to the Department of Industrial Works's approved waste disposal companies.
    • We isolate hazardous waste from trash to promote maximum reuse.
  • Promotion of green zones
    • Our refinery has more than 100 rai of green zones or about 7% of the total area. The zones are covered with trees, bushes and lawns, which include aromatic trees and decorative shrubberies.
  • Environmentally friendly products
    • Diesel fuel of EURO IV standards
    • Gasoline with 95-octane and 91-octane ratings of EURO IV standards with 10-fold reduction in the sulfur content. Thaioil is the first and only company in Thailand to refine and sell these two products.
    • Treated distillate aromatics extract (TDAE) of the European Union quality standards, accepted and certified by leading tire manufacturers. TDAE lowers the dissipation of carcinogenic substances due to the use of worn-out tires.
